Description

The tactograph is a modified x-y stage with a fluid dispensation mechanism. The fluid has sufficient viscosity that it forms a raised shape on a paper. By tracing out diagrams on the paper, we create tactile graphics suitable for a person with visual impairments. The machine is accompanied by software that makes it easy to generate images from a lesson plan, or make an existing book tactile. This is particularly useful for children in the pre-literacy or early literacy stage, where they are being exposed to different concepts not all of which are accessible through models, e.g. the tactograph can also be used to set exam papers in geometry, or make accessible advanced concepts like Venn diagrams. The use of a fluid dropper based system allows us to create tactile graphics in different colours, and the use of additives also creates textures.
