National institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID)

NIEPID was formally inaugurated in the year 1984, as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (then known as Ministry of Welfare), Government of India. The prime objectives of the institution include the following:

  • Development of Human Resources in the field of Mental Retardation
  • Conduct and organizes research and promote development
  • Development of models of care and rehabilitation
  • Ensure consultancy services to voluntary organizations
  • Documentation and disseminate information, and
  • Organize extension and outreach services
The institution is running various courses in order to train Human Resources including Diploma in Special Education (MR) (Duration 2 years), Diploma in Vocational Training and Employment (MR) (Duration 1 year), Diploma in Early Childhood SpI. Education (MR) (Duration 1 year), Bachelor in Rehabilitation Services (MR) /Bachelor in Rehabilitation Therapy (MR) (Duration 4 years), B.Ed. Special Education (MR) (Duration 1 year), PG Diploma in Early Intervention (Duration 1 year), MEd. Special Education (MR) (Duration 1 year),    Masters in Disability Rehabilitation Administration (Duration 2 years), M.Phil. in Rehabilitation Psychology (Duration 2 years)

The Institution is also running continuous certificate and short term rehabilitation education programmes and have trained more then 60,000 human resources. More details about the institution can be accessed from http://www.niepid.nic.in/
