The Social Welfare Department came into existence in the State of Jammu and Kashmir in the year 1960. It plays an important role in addressing problems of weaker sections of the society, Like Old Age Persons, Women in Distress, Physically Challenged People, Mal-Nourished children Lactating and expecting women, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and other Economically Weaker Sections of the Society. In the priority of our National Development, the commitment towards welfare of under-privileged and the down trodden, backward and vulnerable sections of the society is tremendous. The role of the Social Welfare in fulfillment of this commitment thus becomes important among the various sections and classes of our population, there is lot of deprivation and neglect and the Social Welfare Department has to be instrumental for removing the distress of these sections through amelioration and anti- poverty measures.

Schemes:

1. Prosthetic Aid -

Objectives - The handicapped persons are being prosthetic aid in the shape of aids and appliances. Sanctioning Authority Distt. Level Committee headed by DDC, Member Secretary is DSWO and CMO is Member.

Benefits -

  • The handicapped persons are being provided Motorized Try-cycle having not less than 40% deformity
  • To provide hearing aids, wheel chair and artificial limbs etc.

Eligibility Criteria - Handicapped persons with 40% disability.

Documents Required -

  • Disability Certificate issued by the Medical Board.
  • Income Certificate
  • Ration Card

2. Welfare Institutes -

Blind Home - The Department has established one Blind Home in Jammu Division with the objective to provide shelter, care and protection to the Blinds. These schools provides free Boarding, Lodging, Diet, Bedding & Clothing, Medicines, Books, Uniforms, Coaching to the Blind Inmates. A Pocket money of Rs.40/- per month is also provided to the Blind Inmates.
